iFoster Celebrates the 2025 Graduation Cap Contest Winners — Highlighting the Resilience and Achievements of Foster Youth
by iFoster | June 18, 2025

iFoster is proud to announce the winners of its 2025 Foster Youth Graduation Cap Contest, celebrating the creativity, determination, and success of graduating foster youth across the country. This contest invited current and former foster youth to decorate their graduation caps and share their journeys, uplifting their voices during a momentous life milestone.

This year’s winners—Liyah, Lolo, and Leslie—have overcome tremendous adversity on their path to academic success, and each story is a powerful testament to the strength and potential of foster youth. THANK YOU FOR CELEBRATING WITH US.

Liyah Carr - Bachelor of Arts in Nursing

" My name is Liyah. I was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, and I am 18 years old. When I was 16, I found out I had gastric cancer, and I went through radiation and chemotherapy treatment to fight the cancer. Just a year later, I was cancer-free, and I knew from there that I wanted to take care of others. It was a sign to pursue nursing."

Leslie Hernandez-  Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

"I’m a 27-year-old first-generation Latina from California. Entering foster care was a difficult experience that changed everything in my life. I had to grow up quickly and learn how to navigate challenging systems on my own. Early on, I realized that if I wanted a better future, I would have to work hard for it. In the midst of instability, school became my anchor. I committed myself to education—not because it was easy, but because it gave me purpose and direction. That commitment earned me a place on the high school honor roll and, more importantly, sparked the belief that college was not only possible but within reach. Even when self-doubt crept in, I refused to let it define me. With hope and deep gratitude, I embraced every resource available to foster youth—programs, scholarships, and supplies that proved essential to my success. These opportunities became stepping stones, helping me earn two associate degrees from Laney College and, most recently, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from California State University, East Bay. Behind every diploma was a battle—internal and external. But what kept me going was my vision- to return to the communities that raised me and become the support I once needed. I’ve been underestimated, overlooked, and counted out—but I never gave up. I am a testament to resilience, and I stand committed to breaking cycles, opening doors, and creating change for those coming after me."

Lolo Rostami- Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology

" My name is Lolo, I’m 24 and from California. I grew up in foster care, moving from home to home, and never imagined I’d make it to college, let alone earn a bachelor’s degree in marine biology. My love for sharks and the ocean kept me motivated through it all. This degree is more than just an achievement; it’s proof that foster youth can thrive and follow their passions."

Each winner's decorated cap was not just a work of art but a powerful celebration of their individual journey and self-expression—showcasing the vibrant collective voice of our community, its resilience, and the boundless potential of all youth in child welfare to chart courses for brighter futures.
